Ce qui frappe dans l’œuvre d'Atget ce n'est pas tant l'obstination avec laquelle il a parcouru, jour après jour et trente années durant, les rues de Paris et de ses environs, ce qui frappe c'est qu'il se soit si subtilement exprimé dans ces images du vieux Paris, ces vitrines, ces façades ou ces intérieurs "artistiques, pittoresques et bourgeois", qu'il en ait dit autant sur sa nature profonde, sur ses goûts et sur ses convictions politiques, lui qui ne s'est, en paroles, jamais raconté.
